Angie Charvat
Head Assistant
Hi, my name is Angie, and I am the Head Assistant at Hopewell Animal Hospital. I have been part of this team for longer than most — I started working here as a teenager, long before I knew it would become my career. At home I share my life with Allis, my hound mix; Goose, my cat; and a flock of 40 chickens who definitely run the backyard.
Personal Hobbies and Interests
Outside of work I enjoy crochet projects, hunting for a good deal at thrift stores, gardening, horseback riding, hiking, hunting, and fishing. Most importantly, I love spending time with my husband and two daughters.
Favorite Part of My Job
I have so many favourite parts that it is hard to choose just one. I love seeing the pets who come in regularly — some I have known since they were puppies or kittens and have had the privilege of watching grow all the way through their lives. They become part of who I am. At the end of the day, it truly is all about the pets.
Why I Chose This Profession
It started because my mother worked in the field, but I stayed because of Dr. Maxwell. He was the veterinarian I first worked under here, and he took the time to teach a 16-year-old cleaning kennels the why behind everything — from surgical procedures to patient care. He would let me watch from a distance as he operated and would explain what he was doing and why. That mentorship shaped everything. Though he is no longer with us, his influence is something I carry with me every day.
Education
I graduated from Prince George High School in 2008 and went on to study at Mary Baldwin College from 2008 to 2012.
Work History
I have been connected to Hopewell Animal Hospital since I was old enough to work, starting in the kennels during high school and college summers. After graduating, I briefly worked at a clinic in Staunton, VA before returning home and rejoining the team here full time. Over the years I have worked my way from kennel care to my current role as Head Assistant, where I assist with surgical procedures and support our patients through preparation and recovery.
